Overview
The promise and potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to disrupt and transform society is driving the new Industrial Revolution. From deep learning algorithms for cancer diagnosis, application of machine learning to discover new materials, the use of 3D printers in advanced manufacturing, to intelligent systems with cognition and decision-making abilities, AI tools and technologies are enabling breakthroughs in many fields of science and engineering, leveraging these scientific breakthroughs to enable progress on pressing societal challenges, and fundamentally transforming several sectors of the economy.
As AI tools and technologies become ubiquitous, the demand for individuals with a wide range of technical skills and domain knowledge will continue to increase. The AI workforce includes careers that address all components of the data life cycle from data collection, data analysis, visualization, and modeling, software engineering, to cutting-edge research and development of the next generation of algorithms and intelligent systems. While AI is often viewed as a field within Computer Science, there is an advantage to viewing AI through an interdisciplinary lens, recognizing the role that linguistics, biology, cognitive sciences, psychology, mathematics, and statistics play in the development of new tools and technologies. This holistic view can spur the development of innovative, interdisciplinary programs that train the next generation of researchers and innovators.
Objectives
The workshop will bring together key stakeholders from both countries, including leading academic institutions, industry, government agencies, and foundations to develop a roadmap for developing a diverse, globally engaged, AI workforce. The workshop will include exemplars of programs in India and the U.S. and breakout sessions for stakeholders to focus on specific aspects of training and program development under four broad themes:
- AI, Data Science training for Industry 4.0
- Undergraduate Level AI Program and Curriculum Development
- Graduate Level Programs – Computer Science focused
- Graduate Level Programs – Other Engineering / Research focused
